Buying Art for your Home.

Walls, walls, blank walls, crying out for something to fill them. What something? Well… photos, murals, prints, paintings, pottery, sculptures. These are not just space fillers; they say a lot about you as a person. Imagine a colourful abstract adorning your entrance hall?

Art works have been shown to lift most people’s mood and, can you think of a better conversation starter? Case in point. My daughter and son-in-law were having trouble selling their home. A savvy estate agent suggested filling all the blank walls with artworks and taking down the numerous family photos. My daughter, of course, knew of a ready supply of paintings and sketches. Yes, from my collection. The effect was immediate; the house came alive and I don’t think it was mere coincidence that an acceptable offer for the property was accepted a short time later.

Start your own collection

Do you need to be ‘wealthy’ to collect art? Well, presumably you do if you purchase and collect the works of well-known or famous artists. There is, however, a large pool of original work by highly competent visual artists who haven’t acquired recognition – at least not yet.

So, what is fun is to find an artist or several artists whose work you enjoy and purchase a work. Then later, purchase another so that, ever so gradually, you acquire a collection that you are really fond of.

How do you decide what to buy? The short answer is: Buy originals. You could buy prints but then everyone has those!  The Scream, Sunflowers, Mona Lisa, Monet’s Garden

But if your buy originals. They are yours alone

How do you afford to buy originals? There are many artists whose work is less well known and therefore their work is sold more cheaply. Also, many artists produce smaller pieces which will sell for way less than their larger works.

Remember also that many excellent artists who live in areas outside of North America and Western Europe don’t charge as much because they experience a lower cost of living and whose country often has a weaker currency. So, look for artists around the world.

The search for great original art is fun; check online, galleries, garage sales. It is so rewarding to discover the works of a lesser-known artist and whose work really appeals to you.

What art suits your taste? Go with what you like! And choosing art provides an avenue for research and a reason for discussion among friends.

Invest in Yourself

Did you know that when you buy an art piece that caught your fancy, you are investing in yourself. You bought something chosen by you and which has meaning to you.

We often conflate self-indulgence with investing in our own well-being. They are not the same. Investment in oneself involves growth and enhancement of worth. It can enrich your life, express your personality and create long term value. Purchasing art is an investment in yourself

Personal Enrichment. Art can make your home beautiful and bring joy to your life making it a fulfilling experience

Self-Expression. Collecting art allows you to express your personnel tastes and beliefs and it can become deeply perso
